OTTAWA – Yesterday's Liberal announcement to launch consultations on pension security was long overdue for NDP Pensions Critic Scott Duvall. For months, he has been pushing Seniors Minister Filomena Tassi tooth and nail to follow through on the Liberals’ promise to start conducting consultations on retirement security.
“New Democrats are glad that this is finally happening. We’ve been calling on the Minister to act for months, ever since she was appointed to this file,” said Duvall. “While these consultations are long overdue, we look forward to seeing the results.”
While the consultations on pension security are deemed necessary, Duvall stresses that the Liberal government must also amend the bankruptcy and insolvency law to end pension theft to protect the livelihood of Canadian workers and retirees. This week, the Liberals introduced their Fall Economic Update that fails to address the real problem of pension theft.
“It is disappointing, yet not surprising, to see that the Liberals refuse to make pension security a priority in their mini-budget,” added Duvall. “Canadian workers and retirees deserve better. I am certain that once the consultations are over, we will see how vital it is to protect Canadians from pension theft in the case of bankruptcy and insolvency.”
Consultations will be ongoing until December 21, 2018.

Why do we need consultations? Just an election year red herring.
